The fine form of Chippa United Nigeria international goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi in the final months of the recently concluded Premier South African League (PSL) has won over coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr.
Akpeyi lost his first choice spot to Ikechukwu Ezenwa after picking up an injury in training during Nigeria World Cup 2018 Qualifiers, and since then he has failed to reclaim his spot.
Ezenwa who was third choice behind Akpeyi and the main number one Carl Ikeme who is battling Leukaemia is viewed by many as the number one goalkeeper of the team but his form for Enyimba has been mixed.
His inconsistent display in goal for Enyimba coincided with a period where Akpeyi has returned to full fitness and form. A situation which could see the Chippa United ace return to his post as first choice.
Both goalkeepers will battle it out for the first choice spot beginning from when the team will converge for their first World Cup 2018 preparatory friendly game against Congo DR in Port Hacourt.
