Nigeria’s world cup opponent, Iceland will be sweating over the injury of midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson after the 28-year-old was ruled out between 6 and 8 weeks with a knee injury.
Sigurdsson is a key player in Manager, Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side and is expected to make a huge impact in the team’s first world cup outing.
He sustained the injury playing for his EPL side Everton in Saturday’s Premier League win over Brighton.
According to Everton, who also have Super Eagles forward Henry Onyekuru on their books, consultation with a specialist on the player’s injury gave him no chance of a return earlier than April.
Everton Manager, Sam Allardyce said,“We’ll continue to assess Gylfi’s progress on a week-to-week basis and the medical team will work very closely with him, as they would with any injured player, to get him back playing as quickly as possible.”
Nigeria and Iceland will square up for the second time in international football, when they clash in Russia on 24 June.
