TP Mazembe have defended their CAF Confederation title with a 2-1 on aggregate as SuperSport miss out on a first continental prize.
Both teams fired blank in South Africa having a 2-1 draw in the first leg in Congo. SuperSport away goal advantage was not put to use as TP Mazembe survived their scare to secure a goalless draw in Atteridgeville on Saturday night.
In a tension-soaked match, each team had a player dismissed in the final 10 minutes.
Mazembe’s Chongo Kabaso was a shown red having received two yellow cards, while Thuso Phala was shown a straight red for a reckless tackle.
The first leg, played in Lubumbashi, ended 2-1 in Mazembe’s favour.
Democratic Republic of Congo’s TP Mazembe have won a third continental trophy in as many years.
Defending champions TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo secured a 2-1 home victory over South Africa’s SuperSport United on Sunday in the first leg of 2017 CAF Confederation Cup final.
TP Mazembe hopes to win the trophy back-to-back having won it for the first time last year.
The hosts started on a bright note in front of their home fans in Lubumbashi, taking the lead through a goal from Adama Traore in the 18th minute.
SuperSport responded quickly after the break through a powerful shot from the boot of Sipho Mbule which gave the visitors the equalizer and what could be a precious away-goal after 48 minutes.
Mazembe restored their lead 19 minutes later thanks to Ghanaian midfielder Daniel Nii Adjei’s stunning strike to make it 2-1 to the home side.
SuperSport’s New Zealand international forward, Jeremy Brockie – the leading scorer in this season’s competition with 10 goals – traveled all the way from Peru to reach DR Congo after playing a World Cup qualifier.
Brockie began the match but was replaced by coach Eric Tinkler in the second half.
This was SuperSport’s first loss in 14 Confederation Cup matches since their defeat in Africa this year – away to Al Ahly Shendy of Sudan in the first leg of their last-32 qualifier.
